A small Islamic mortar

Cast bronze with silver plating and copper damascening. Slightly tapering form with a central horizontal rib, inclined lower rim and flaring upper rim. Decorated with calligraphic inscriptions. The base rounded due to use, a repaired crack to the upper rim, the silver plating worn in some areas. H 8.3, D 9.2 cm. Weight c. 8.5 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan/Afghanistan, 12th - 13th century.
