An Islamic mortar

Chased cast bronze with remnants of red pigment. Of cylindrical form with flaring upper and lower rims. Decorated with two rows of raised bosses surrounding four engraved rhombus motifs. The borders with circular motifs filled with foliate ornament and calligraphic inscriptions. Greenish corrosion, the interior with sintering, the base rounded due to use. H 14.5, D 19.3 cm. Weight c. 5 kg. Including a pestle with a central rib.
