A French mortar dated 1604

Cast bronze with golden brown patina. Of tapering form with rounded flaring rim. Decorated with fine moulded horizontal bands and with a band of tendrils in the lower section interspersed with wrestling putti (?) and horsemen beneath octagonal plaques with grotesque mascarons. Two raised lion mascarons on either side. Signed and dated "ANTOINE SIMAY 1604". With remnants of pigment to the interior. H 15, D 19.8 cm. Weight c. 7.2 kg.
