Cast bronze with fine golden brown shimmering patina. Of tapering form with a stepped base. Decorated with a band of lily flowers beneath delicate arabesques. The handles formed as dolphins. Inscribed in capital letters with the name of the patron below the rim: "GEISBERT WILLEMSEN ANNO 1616". Some minor signs of wear. H 14.9, D 16.5 cm. Weight c. 4.6 kg. Includes a corresponding pestle.
Nijmegen, von Trier workshop, attributed to Peter von Trier III, 1616.

There is documentary evidence of a branch of the von Trier family in the Aachen area and later in the Netherlands. The names Peter, Johann, and Heinrich appear in the family again and again. However, the relationships of the family members to each other cannot be traced with certainty. All that is known is that the von Trier family worked as bell casters and thus also as mortar casters. Since few to no signatures can be found on the mortars, it is almost impossible for secure attributions to be made. However the forms, decorative elements and the high quality of the casting, speak for a long and successful tradition of mortar casting.
