A signed mortar dated 1626

Cast bronze with golden brown patina. Of cylindrical form with numerous bands of moulding and a single handle formed as a dolphin. The rim with a broad band inscribed in capital letters: "VIVITVR INGENIO CETERA MORTIS ERVNT". The base inscribed with the signature: "CHRISTIANVS PREIS FECIT". The display side decorated with two putti in flight, one holding a vase of flowers, beside them the date "1626". H 15, D 14.5 cm. Weight c. 2.8 kg.
