An Italian mortar dated 1660

Cast bronze with golden brown patina. Of squat, tapering form with a waisted base and protruding stepped rim. Two knob handles. The lower section with a broad band inscribed in capital letters: "GIO GIACOMO PALAZZO 1660" beneath a depiction of the Annunciation in a rectangular surround to the display side and a bundle of acanthus leaves to the reverse. H 20.5, D 26.2 cm. Weight c. 17.2 kg. Includes a corresponding pestle.
Attributed to South Italy, probably Sicily, 1660.
