A large maki-e lacquer box for writing paper (ryôshibako) with various inlays. Meiji period, late 19th century

The lid with rounded corners displays a river landscape under a full moon with a roofed platform built into the water, reeds along the shore and wooden stakes, above a group of plovers. The inlays of a lead-gray material und aogai as well as the stylized waves on the water surface are elements of the Rinpa style. Nashiji to the inside. On the reverse of the lid a group of bivalve shells, the single shells displaying various scenes in maki-e. The rims lined with silver. Wooden box.
