A set of lacquer ryôshibako and suzuribako. Early 20th century

Both with rounded corners and edges, each decorated on the lid with a Beshimi, an Okina and a Hannya mask, the inside of the ryôshibako with silvery nashiji, the inside of the suzuribako decorated with stage props representing well known nô dramas like pine sapling, broom and rake (alluding to “Tagasako”) and other attributes, the suzuribako with a silvery mizuire, signed, both boxes with rims lined with silver. Both pieces each with a wooden box, the larger one with inscription reading nô-men maki-e bunko (paper box with nô masks in maki-e), signed urushi-shi Sô… and sealed, the smaller box (not belonging) with inscription on the inside of the lid including signature and seal, and at the base the date reading Taishô 11 (1922).
