A lacquered paper maché Bugaku mask. 19th century

Of Konron type showing a bald man with wrinkles to the forehead, at the eyes and around the lips, with oval pierced eyes, a long slender nose pointing downwards and a smiling mouth.The lacquer imitation flaking polychrome. The reverse with a fabric lining painted black.
Height 26.4 cm

The mask is a copy of an ancient dance mask typical of the Meiji period. Kanô Tessai specialised in copying such masks.
