A stag antler netsuke of Tanuki. Second half 19th century

Tanuki’s head emerging from a bell (mokugyo). The paws folded in front of its chest and the long robe that harmoniously merges into the rose of the stag antler demonstrate the artist’s willingness – a Japanese peculiarity – to subordinate himself as much as possible to the conditions of the material. Signed Tomochika.
