A Berlin KPM porcelain dinner plate from a subsequent addition to the general's service for Prince Wilhelm of Prussia

Model no. 1054. The well painted with a large black cross picked out in silver and surrounded by a broad oak and laurel wreath entwined with black and red ribbons. Blue sceptre mark and K.P.M., red imperial orb mark, brown circle, pressnummer 34, incised III. D 24.8 cm.
C. 1837 - 44.

The general's service for the younger “brother his majesty” Prince Wilhelm (1783 – 1851) was delivered on 7th May 1821. The service designed for the Prussian prince was considerably less elaborately decorated than those of the other generals. However, they all utilised the central motif of the Iron Cross surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel. Prince Wilhelm appears to have actually used his service. Alongside this plate, we know of two further additions to the ensemble that were produced during his lifetime. The service originally encompassed 150 dinner plates and 50 dessert plates decorated with views, which are now lost. 72 of the early plates from this service are currently in the possession of the Hessische Hausstiftung.

Provenance

Collection of Renate and Tono Dreßen.
