A micromosaic cross pendant

18k gold cross pendant with a moulded rim, decorated with finely applied micromosaics portraying the Virgin Mary in the centre surrounded by the dove of the Holy Spirit and three doves of peace carrying laurel branches in the arms of the cross on cobalt blue ground. With a large, removable bail. The piece can also be worn as a brooch via the removable pin back. Unmarked. H total 6.5 cm. Weight 25.95 g.
Presumably Rome, ca. 1860/70.

Provenance

Acquired as a souvenir on the Roman art market in 1950 on occasion of the celebration of the Holy Year under the papacy of Pius XII.
