An Islamic mortar

Engraved cast bronze, mottled golden brown patina with calcific deposit, remnants of red pigment and verdigris. Originally of cylindrical design with protruding upper and lower rims. Decorated with two rows of four raised droplet motifs alternating with engraved lotus buds. A flowering tendril motif along the lower edge, the upper with foliage in cartouches alternating with round medallions. The base slightly rounded due to use, the lower section more severely. With a casting flaw to the base and a breakage to the lower edge. H 12.5, D 16.4 cm, weight c. 3.8 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan / Iran, 13th - 14th C.
