A Dutch mortar made for Secretarius Hugo Lenten

Golden brown cast bronze with brown natural patina (slightly mottled in some areas). Of tapering form with a thick, tiered base. The centre decorated with a moulding flanked above and below by bands of acanthus tendrils, grotesque demi-figures, vases of flowers and cornucopias. With a wide banderole below the rim inscribed in Latin capital letters: “HVGO LENTEN R M DANIAE SECRETARIVS”. H 17, D 17.1 cm, weight c. 7.9 kg.
Attributed to the Netherlands, Enkhuizen, early 17th C.
