A Nuremberg single-handled mortar with lion mascarons

Golden brown cast bronze with reddish brown patina. Of tapering form resting on four stylised paw feet crowned with lion mascarons from which issue one shorter and three longer angular ribs. With flaring moulded rim and angular, octagonally faceted handle with four mouldings on the outer facet. Some slight verdigris in the indentations around the base. H 19.8, D 18 cm, weight c. 6 kg.
