A dated Gothic single-handled mortar with lion mascarons

Cast bronze with slightly mottled golden brown patina. Of tapering form with slightly flaring base and rim. Supported on four paw feet crowned with lion mascarons from which issue three vertical ribs with low relief decoration. With an angular, rectangularly faceted handle. The lower section and the outer face of the handle engraved “1505”. The base slightly rounded due to use. H 12, D 11.5 cm, weight c. 1.6 kg.
Southern Germany, 1st third 16th C.
