An Italian apothecary mortar

Cast bronze with fine golden brown patina. Of cylindrical form with a narrow base, flaring, funnel-like rim and baluster-form handles. Decorated with one round medallion inscribed “S. STAN. KOST(...)” and one with a bust in profile, both flanked by crossed branches. The lower section with a band of meandering foliage and three heads in profile. H 20.8, D 22.4 cm, weight c. 12.5 kg.
Attributed to Rome, 18th C.

The Polish Jesuit novice Stanislaus Kostka (1550 – 1568) died in Rome and was canonised in 1726.
