An Italian mortar with lion's head decoration

Cast bronze with dark brown-greenish patina. Of tapering form with protruding base and funnel-like rim. Decorated with bands of deep mouldings surrounding a central, slightly worn, band of scrolling arabesques. The handles formed as stylised lions' heads. H 26.5, D 32.7 cm, weight c. 40 kg.
Central Italy, 17th C.
