A Renaissance silver ducat box

wenzel s. 392 Cylindrical gilt copper and silver box. The base finely engraved with a depiction of a phoenix, the lid with a prong set silver plaque decorated with scrollwork and birds in polychrome enamel, presumably based on a design by the Nuremberg engraver Hieronymus Bang. Includes an ebonised wood votive plaque inscribed in tin inlays “Verbum DOMINI manet in aeternum” and dated 1616. H 1.4; diameter 4 cm, H of the panel 8.5; W 17.6 cm.
South German, around 1600. The box unmarked, the votive plaque with the initials “AE F”.

By repute, both items were always passed down to the next generation together. The back of the wooden panel bears a 19th century hand-written label detailing the inheritance tradition.
