A Régence Strasbourg silver beaker

Tapering, flared beaker engraved with Régence decoration on a dotted ground. The lid with corresponding decoration and floral finial. H 14 cm, weight 230 g.
Marks of Johann Friderich Unselt, c. 1720.

In the second half of the 17th century up until the mid-18th century, it was a tradition in Alsatian towns to present each new member of the town council with a so-called council or magistrate's beaker. The smaller towns, which usually did not have their own silversmith workshops, often commissioned makers in Strasbourg with their production. A beaker by Imlin, dated 1714 and almost identical to ours, is housed in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. Cf. cat. Deux siècles d'orfèvrerie à Strasbourg, Strasbourg, 2004, p. 53, no. 13.
