A marble figure of a bound centaur

White marble figure on a moulded plinth. Carved in the round. H 59, W 36, D 20 cm.
Rome, late 18th / 19th C.

This depiction is based on the so-called ancient "Furietti Centaur" in dark grey marble in the Capitoline Museums of Rome, reproducing the subject in a smaller size. Another specimen of the centaur in white marble, excavated in Rome and formerly belonging to the Borghese collection, was acquired by Napoleon in 1807 and transferred to the Louvre.
