A terracotta model of a satyr as an atlant

Depicted kneeling with the right arm resting on the thigh and the left lifted over the head. With remnants of polychromy. The front of the plinth numbered “99” in sepia. With a label on the reverse inscribed “LANNA 3249”. The back left corner of the plinth, both feet and two fingers missing. H 21.5 cm.

The “satyr as candelabra bearer” was a common motif in northern Italian bronze casting from the 15th to 17th centuries. In German art, also, the motif of the satyr as an atlant can be found in the base of the arcade gallery in the Zwinger in Dresden, between the Mathematical-Physical Salon and the Wall Pavilion.
