Salomon Corrodi was born in Fehraltdorf near Zurich in Switzerland and arrived in Rome in November 1832 at the age of 22. He remained closely connected to this city throughout his life, even though he occasionally travelled to other regions. In Rome he was well connected with the many other artists from the north living here. This secured him numerous lucrative contacts, especially with the travellers from other European nations who were undertaking the Grand Tour. One especially prominent patron was Tzar Nicholas, who purchased some Italian vedutas from him in 1845 and had them shipped to St. Petersburg. His clients also included the English royal family and the Grand Duke of Tuscany. His beautiful views of Italian cities and landscapes were also in demand among middle class circles. This way, Salomon Corrodi's works spread throughout Europe. He mainly created works on paper, primarily watercolours and gouaches - as opposed to his talented son Hermann, who specialized in large-scale oil paintings.
