Ibero-Flämisch 15th century

A 15th century Ibero-Flemish carved alabaster figure of the Virgin and Child

Carved in the round. With remains of older, presumably original, polychromy. A depiction of the Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose holding the Christ Child in Her left hand, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. This work, although reminiscent of Flemish sculpture, displays artistic peculiarities in the stiff pose of the Child, the thin-waisted body of the Virgin and Her unusual facial features that indicate an origin on the Iberian peninsula.
The Virgin's right hand lost. Wear with minor losses. Height 44 cm.
