Southern Netherlands Mid-15th century

A mid-15th century carved wood figure of a bishop saint, Southern Netherlands

Carved in the round. With extensive remains of older polychromy, overpainted in some areas. A figure of a saint in bishop's robes, designed for a frontal viewpoint. He wears a chasuble and mitre, the left half of which with the lappets is lost. The slight contrapposto of the bishop's stance is largely concealed by the smooth but detailed drapery of his robes.
The separately worked hands lost. The plinth amended. The tips of the feet lost. Wear throughout. Height 105 cm.
