Meister von Mauer, circle of

A carved limewood figure of the Virgin and Child, circle of the Master of Mauer

Carved in the round, with partially overpainted older polychromy. A finely carved figure of the Virgin standing on the crescent moon in a pronounced contrapposto, holding the dynamicly posed Christ Child in both hands. The exaggerated poses of the figures and the expansive drapery of the Virgin's cloak display stylistic parallels to works by the Master of Mauer, active in Lower Austria from around 1500 to 1525. Compare, for example, his masterpiece – the altar to the Virgin in Mauer near Melk – which was carved in around 1513/1516. This work can be attributed to the artist's closer circle and dated to around 1520.
Minimal wear. Height 51 cm.

Provenance

1961 in the Hermann Schwartz collection, Mönchengladbach. - Subsequently in family ownership.
