A four-case inro. Probably late 18th century

The body with a black lacquer background with fine graduated gold dust, with a hoo bird flying above flowering kiri branches in iroe-togidashi. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Shigenori and kao in red lacquer. Small glass ojime.
Height 9.1 cm; width 5.8 cm

The Tomkinson catalogue lists an inro with hoo and kiri in togidashi signed Shingenori under no. 54. In the uppermost case of the present inrô is a paper label inscribed Shigenori / 2212 and the pound cypher with the price scratched away. On the underside of the inro are remnants of glue pertaining to a sticker. It is possible that the present inro once belonged to Michael Tomkinson.
