Two small wrought iron hammers

The thicker head stamped "PAULET J.". L 11 and 16.5 cm.
Germany / France, 16th - 19th C.

It is not clear what purpose this small, almost miniature, hammer originally served. It may have been used to forge precious metals, as the hammering of such items only requires a small radius. A similar small hammer with a curved head can be found in the armoury of the SKD under inv. no. P 0255. The piece is dated to around 1570 – 90 and was used either as a garden tool or as an accessory to a crossbow or during bloodletting.
