A “Büttenmann“ goblet

A figure of a striding man on an earth mound base carrying a metal barrel on his back. Carved from ivory, bone and limewood with a silver plated metal barrel. Restored thumb, a chip to one ankle. H 28 cm.
Switzerland or Tyrol, late 18th / 19th C., after Simon Troger.

Similar figures by Simon Troger can be considered as prototypes for this piece, which can be dated to his Munich period, such as the piece now in the possession of the SMPK (published in Theuerkauff, Die Bildwerke in Elfenbein des 16.-19. Jahrhunderts, Berlin 21986, no. 74 f.)
