A Parisian ormolu pendulum clock with a shepherd couple

Finely chased and detailed fire-gilt and burnished bronze clock with white enamel dial and pierced and gilded hands. 14-day movement with thread suspension and half-hourly striking on a bell. The minute hand slightly warped, cracks to the enamel, the attribute at the feet of the lovers missing. H 32.3, W 34.5, D 10.7 cm.
Paris, the bronze attributed to Claude Galle, late 18th / early 19th C.

I, Munich 1986, illus. 5.13.17, for a pendulum clock with a depiction of Neptune that the authors describe as having "den für Galle spezifischen Stil der Körpermodellierung, der (sich) durch manieristische Überlängung der Proportionen und Bemühen um Gefühlsausdruck in Haltung und Mimik" (p. 370), a description which also applies to this piece.
