A large sumiaka lacquer box. Edo period, 17th century

Of rectangular shape with a high, slightly domed lid, with clematis scrolls in makie on a nashiji ground, at the corners and along the sides red lacquer above fabric. Inside a tray also rendered in nashiji. Gilt metal fittings with scrolls in engraving and a loose ring. Traces of usage to the base.
Height 22.2 cm; width 29 cm; depth 37 cm
