A Hida school boxwood netsuke of a skeleton and a wolf, in the manner of Shoko. Late 19th century

The human skeleton is giving the wolf a beating who, lying on his back, is warding off the blows. The eyes of the wolf of bone and black glass.
Height 4.4 cm

Meinertzhagen considers this popular subject to be a graveyard scene with "a skeleton of a man apparently avenging himself on the wolf that slew him". (MCI, p. 748).
