A Meissen porcelain cup and saucer with a portrait of Emperor Joseph II

The cup painted with a bust of the Austrian emperor flanked by palm branches, the saucer with a mourning ribbon in a floral surround. Blue crossed swords mark with star and additional marks in the basal ring, black 28. (cup). H of cup 6.7, D of saucer 13.6 cm.
Circa / after 1790.

The Austrian Archduke Joseph (1741 - 1790) was proclaimed Emperor on 29th November 1780 after the death of his mother and co-ruler Maria Theresa. After a ten-year reign, he died on 20th February 1790 as a result of tuberculosis and was buried in the Capuchin crypt.
