Upholstered chair by Peter Behrens

Solid mahogany, stained black and varnished, spring upholstery with wicker and horse hair, reconstructed silk covers with silver threads (protected against corrosion). Includes a pattern sample of the original textile covering, H 29, W 40.5 cm (framed). In visually impeccable condition. H 80, W 76, D 71 cm.
The production attributed to Keller & Reiner, Berlin, around 1910.

This armchair bears impressive testimony the elegant interior culture curated by Peter Behrens prior to the First World War. In the Berlin period, that is, after 1907, he increasingly specialized in the design of industrial products, but also in furnishings for various companies. The magazine "Innendekoration" depicts a comparable armchair in the reception or anteroom of a client, placed in front of marble walls in an imposing interior. The specimen shown here with its unique and sumptuous silver thread upholstery speaks rather for a private production. It can be assumed that the textile design also originates from Peter Behrens, as fabric design is of great importance within his oeuvre.

Provenance

From an important European private collection.
