A Gothic single-handled mortar with mascarons

Coppery golden coloured cast bronze with shimmering chocolate brown patina, wrought iron ring. Tapering mortar with a protruding rim. Decorated with large lion's head mascarons and putti heads flanking the large monogram "G.M.". With a single twisted band handle suspending a slender iron ring. Wear throughout, minor irregularities caused by casting and usage. H 11.6, D 13.9 cm, includes pestle, weight with pestle c. 3.2 kg.
Italy, late 15th - mid-16th C.
