A Late Gothic stained glass window fragment with the head of St. Ursula

Clear glass painted in brown and silver pigments, coloured glass, leading (replaced). With corrosion, parts of the halo and the purple glass panes later. H 29.5, W 24 cm, mounted in a painted wooden frame behind a pane of milk glass, H 45, W 39.8, D 8.5 cm.
Attributed to Cologne, probably first third 16th C.

This fragment of a stained glass roundel is traditionally interpreted as a depiction of St. Ursula, as this is who the previous owners saw in the panel. The work's similarity to the depiction of the saint on Stefan Lochner's altar of the Cologne city patrons unmistakable, the head is tilted at the same angle (albeit to the other side), the eyes downcast, the hair tucked behind the ear, the magnificent crown almost identical.

Provenance

Given as a gift to the Deputy American Honorary Consul in Düsseldorf in 1938 in thanks for an entry permit.
