Le tabouret de porcelaine. Mandchoukuo

A Manchurian woman sitting on a porcelain garden seat, decorated with a tiger. Sign. in pencil: Paul Jacoulet. Good luck hammer seal: Jakurei. Watermark: JP. Jakurei. Block carver: Maeda Kentarô. First edition (without title): 47/150. 1936. Fine impression, blind printing, very good colours, mica, gold and silver, foxing in yellow area, somewhat browned, paper undulating and slightly creased in margin, remnants of former mounting in corners verso.

Le tabouret is the first (and arguably the best) design in the series of Manchurian and Mongolian portraits for which Jacoulet used very expensive pigments. With this series he established his reputation as technically most interesting woodblock artist of the modern era.
