A wood and bamboo ikebana vase. Early 20th century

Of square cross section each side consisting of a wooden board and strips of goma-dake, on one side a stag beetle in black lacquer. Inside a painted bamboo tube. Tomobako, inscribed on the lid Kabutomushi makie hanaire (stag beetle in lacquer flower vase) and on the reverse of the lid signed Heian Zôhiko and sealed Zôhiko.

The Zôhiko lacquer workshop was founded in Kyoto in 1681 and was headed by Nishimura Hikobei and his descendants from the mid-18th century until 2009. The lacquer shop continues until the present day and nowadays operates under the name of Zôhiko Co., Ltd. in Kyoto Teramachi.
