A Pala stone stele of Buddha Shakyamuni. Northeastern India, Bihar. 9th/11th century

Seated in meditation on a double lotus base above a throne with drapery supported by two lions. The right hand held in bhumisparshamudra, the left hand in dhyanamudra in his lap. Behind the figure a cushion and the backrest with lintel supported by two bulbous columns, behind the Buddha's head a double nimbus with an engraved inscription running around it. On the back-slab two stupa and foliage of the pipal tree at the tip. Wooden stand.
