A parcel-gilt copper-alloy figure of Milarepa. Tibet. 19th/20th century

The ascetic yogi and "cotton-clad" Mila sits in a semi-closed pose ardhaparyanka on an antelope skin and rectangular pedestal, holding his right hand shell-like to his ear to hear the music of the spheres and the voice of the teaching, the line rests in his lap holding the patra (alms bowl), the yogapatta (meditation belt) is streched from his shoulder to his knee. The copper cover plate of the closed throne base is decorated with engraved visvavajra (double vajra) in a round medallion.
