A silver-inlaid bronze figure of Maitreya. Kashmir. In the Swat style of 8th/9th century

Seated in dhyanasana on a rectangular seat supported by a pair of lions and atop a low lotus throne, the right hand lowered in varadamudra, the left hand clutching the corner of his robe. He is dressed in a pleated dhoti and sash draped around his elbows, adorned with armlets and a necklace, both eyes and urna silver-inlaid topped by a tall foliate crown and flanked by pendulous jeweled earlobes.
