A thangka of Usnisavijaya. Tibet. 16th/17th century

The three-headed and eight-armed transcendent bodhisattva seated in padmasana, her upper right hand holding a small Buddha figure alluding to her nickname "Mother of all Budhas", the other hands holds a capa (bow) and a shara (arrow) representing the ward off evil spirits, a vishvavajra (double vajra), a pasha (noose) for drawing the weak, and a ratnakalasa (jewel vase) indicating material assistance, one of the hands is open downward in varadamudra (wish-granting gesture), another points up in abhyamudra (encouragement gesture). The three faces with a third eye and surmounted by an elaborate crown, backed by a nimbus and aureole surrounded by flora. Gouache on cloth, details heightened in gold. Brocade mounting.
