A bronze bust "Pseudo-Seneca"

With shimmering patina on a yellow marble base. H with base 25.8 cm.
Naples, 19th C.

This bust is based on a late 1st century BC Roman bronze bust discovered in 1754 in the Papyrus Villa at Herculaneum, believed to represent Seneca the Younger, the eminent Roman philosopher. His gaunt features seemed to reflect his Stoic philosophy. However, modern research refuted this attribution, which is why the term "Pseudo-Seneca" is used today. The Roman bust is kept in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (inv. no. 6186). Its copies were popular souvenirs of the Grand Tour.
