A parcel gilt silver tankard

Slender cylindrical vessel on a moulded basal ring with a domed hinged lid and thumbrest. The scroll handle with beading and an armorial terminal. Engraved with an arms of alliance and the monograms "I.D.H. E.K." in a large laurel wreath surround beneath a symbol of friendship and the inscription "Gottes Reiche Segen Hand Bindet Treuer Freunde Band". Unmarked. H 20.5 cm, weight 783 g.
Presumably North German, circa 1635.

Schliemann mentions a tankard made in around 1635, identical in construction and engravings, with marks by the Hamburg master Hinrich Ohmßen (no. 181/3). Since the design of this work indicates it to be a token of friendship, the present version is obviously a contemporary copy of the Ohmßen tankard for the holder of the second coat of arms.
