Florentine School late 16th century

A portrait of a lady, bust length, in a pink dress and a white lace chemise, with a carnation and a pearl necklace

Oil on panel (parquetted). 60.5 x 47 cm.

A young woman, portrayed in three quarters, turns her gaze towards the beholder. The rich dress and the pearls that adorn her neck connote her as member of the upper Florentine class, although unfortunately her identity is not known. The panel was most likely conceived as an engagement portrait, as revealed by the carnation decorating the breast of the lady: in fact, red carnations or pinks were symbols of betrothal.

Stylistically, the work can be linked to the late mannerist Florentine production: The position of the figure, the meticulous description of details and the naturalistic rendering of the sitter are elements that highlight how this portrait has close analogies with the works of the same genre by artists such Michele di Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, Santi di Tito and foremost Alessandro Allori.
