Italian Caravaggesque Painter 17th century

The Concert

Oil on canvas (relined). 90 x 114 cm.

The genre of depicting figures making music, the Concerti, originated in Venice as early as around 1500, and had a revival in the Roman art scene from the end of the 16th century onwards. Caravaggio and his circle often depicted the subject, and it became extremely popular throughout the 17th century. This unknown painter drew inspiration from the examples by Merisi and his followers, enlivening his composition with allegorical elements.
