Flemish second half 15th century

A Flemish figure of the Virgin and Child, 2nd half 15th century

Wood, carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. The top of the head flattened. With remnants of older polychromy. Designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint, depicting the Virgin Mary standing in a gently swaying pose holding the clothed Christ over Her hip. The figure's sculptural volume is largely defined by the backwards leaning pose of the Virgin and the thick folds of Her cloak.
The arms and left leg of the Child missing. With vertical hairline cracks, minor losses and wear throughout. Height 86 cm.

Provenance

From a Dutch collection.
