A late 15th century Main-Franconian carved wood angel

Carved in the round, partially freestanding, the underside also carved. With partially overpainted older polychromy to the front. Kneeling figure of an angel holding a large barleytwist candlestick in its hands. The figure's right-facing stance suggests that it would originally have been accompanied by a similar left-facing pendant. The fine quality of the carving is especially evident in the detailed rendering of the hair and facial features, as well as the skillfully depicted drapery of the robes.
With some vertical hairline cracks. Wear with minor losses. Height 43 cm (without pricket).
