Brussels late 15th century

A late 15th century Brussels carved wood relief of the Deposition from the Cross

Carved three-quarters in the round, partially pierced and freestanding, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Finely carved high relief depiction of the Deposition from the Cross with Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea removing the body, the Virgin Mary, Saint John and Mary Magdalene in the foreground and two further mourning women in the background. The sides are flattened in the lower sections, indicating that the relief originally formed part of a multi-panelled altarpiece. It bears the hammer assay mark of the city of Brussels on the reverse.
Parts of Mary Magdalene's left arm missing. Wear throughout. Losses due to insect damage, especially to the plinth. 48 x 32 x 15 cm.
