Two Flemish carved oak figures of Roman soldiers, circa 1530/1540

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. Two figures of soldiers standing on a narrow plinth. Turned towards each other in conversation, one figure lays his hand upon the other's shoulder. Presumably originally part of a Crucifixion scene in a larger altarpiece.
A small drilled hole in the right arm of the soldier on the right. A large addition has been made to the original plinth beneath the figures' feet. Height 32.5 cm (without additions).
